Takalik Maya Lodge>> Our Biodiversty
Takalik Maya Lodge is developed around 11 hectares of forests in recovery that form the Private Natural Reserve "La Montana". The forest is catalogued as a Sub tropical (Zone of Life, según Holdridge) and it is characterized by a rich amount of species of plants and animals.  The area has an average of 4,000 mm of annual precipitation, which contributes to the high diversity in the region.  Unfortunately, in the southern coast, traditionally an agricultural zone, they have barely conserved what was remaining of the forests, those that are used as refuges for the species of wild animals.  The conservation and recuperation of forests in this region is of the utmost importance.

Inside of the reserve, there exists nine water springs from the mountain, which feed two rivers Xab and Ixchiya.  One of them forms a waterfall, under which there is a pool where guests can take a refreshing dip.

In the reserve, you will encounter the majority of the mammal families that s that exist in Guatemala, including families of rodents, bats and carnivores. One could mention the nutria. (Lutra longicaudis), tepezcuintle (Agouti paca), pizote (Nasua Narica), ocelote (Leopardos pardales), among others.

The forest presents a high diversity of amphibians and reptiles.  You can find various species that are endemic, among which are two species of frogs of the Eleutherodactylus genre, and, in total, they have reported 29 species including one type of toad.
The high biodiversity is not limited to the groups already mentioned.  There exist a reported 107 species of birds on the reserve and 187 for the region.  Also, one can mention the Penelopina negra, 9 different species of humming birds, 3 species of parrots and parakeets and various species of Falconiformes.
