Takalik Maya Lodge

The hotel is located in the department of Retalhuleu, 200 Km from Guatemala City. To get there from Guatemala City or Antigua, you should take CA2 Highway, and at Km 190.5, turn right before Coatepeque which will take you to El Asintal. It is necessary to go through this village and continue for approximately 6 Km.. The highway is completely paved, with the exception of the last two Kms., and can be driven throughout the year.

The project is located over part of what once was the Mayan city of Tak'alik Abaj. Presently, it is the National Archeological Park of Tak'alik. This city was at its peak from the mid to the end of the Pre-Classical Period from 800 BC to 200 AD.

The location includes more than 230 sculptures, monuments, and altars. Many of these sculptures show the convergence of four styles: Maya, Barrigon, Olmeca and local. This cultural diversity makes this a unique and interesting place for lovers of the Mayan culture.

The hotel was once part of the main house on the coffee farm called Montes Eliseos, which is still used for the cultivation and processing of coffee as it has been for more than a century. The enormous water wheels on the farm were imported from England during the height of the coffee production in the country, and they date back to 1880. These wheels are still used, but today they have been adapted to provide a clean, environmentally friendly energy alternative.
